monkThanks to the most wonderful Martin Kochanski over at Universalis.com we’re now offering a way to pray the Daily Office here on LampeterParish.org (you’ll find the link to our Office page in the sidebar on the right >>>). It’s the Roman Catholic form of the office (which is very beautiful, and used by St Dunstan’s Abbey, the Benedictine community to which I belong) – I’m not aware of the Church in Wales daily office being offered online anywhere yet, or indeed any form of the office in Welsh. I hope it’s a helpful resource here for those who want to connect with this ancient and life-changing practice of Christian prayer.

sick-computerThere doesn’t seem to have been much going on here on lampeterparish.org for a good few weeks now. In fact, there’s been plenty of behind the scenes activity, as I tried to unravel our little (pre-) Christmas present: the site got hacked. Someone with an unfortunate deficit of goodwill trashed the site. Even when I managed to get it back up and running, I quickly discovered that it had become impossible to add new material – any posts, pictures, sermons etc that got added to the site would disappear within a very short time.

It looks like I might have it all fixed now, and the security locked down a little tighter. Of course, I just don’t have the resources to keep out a determined attacker, but I’m hoping there aren’t too many of them who would find this site an attractive target. Meanwhile, please pray for our hacker friend – pray for the grace that he (or she) might find ways of turning his skills and talents to more productive and loving uses.

At the start of November we’re launching OpenBook, an initiative to help people pray the Bible. Meeting in small groups we’ll work our way through Luke’s Gospel, setting our individual life stories alongside the great story of God. As we share the experience of reflecting on the Gospel stories we’ll gain fresh insights and perspectives that will help us to live with greater clarity, confidence, and purpose.

OpenBook groups are open to anyone living in the United Parish, or worshipping in one of our congregations. More details can be found on our OpenBook page. A PDF copy of a leaflet giving more information and an application form can be downloaded by clicking here.

This Sunday (September 2) St Peter’s Church in Lampeter welcomes Jeff Johnson from Camano Island, Washington, who will be leading us in contemplative singing, prayer, and readings during the 11am morning service.

In 2000 Jeff, already a well established Christian musician and songwriter, began holding Selah services in small churches. The services combine “silent prayer, simple choruses and hymns with readings from Scripture and prayers in the Christian Celtic tradition,” he says. “The word selah is a musical term found in the Psalms meaning ‘to pause or rest’. We hope you find something here that will encourage you to pause and kindle a greater trust, hope and peace that comes from being still before the Lord and waiting on Him.”
